Welcome

Every been caught by surprise? Ever been blown away by something? This is what this ministry has done to me. When God gave me the idea for A Pause to Ponder God’s Word I never dreamed that it would grow to what it is today (and it continues to grow). It began with a pastor’s desire to help his parishioners keep their focus during Passion Week, offering to send a devotional each morning of that week to those who would like to receive it. The next thing I knew I was getting email requests to receive the devotional along with requests to continue writing and sending them, in addition to requests for previously written ones. The rest, as they say, is history. I stand amazed and humbled that God would grant me the privilege of ministering to people via this medium.

This site is not designed to WOW you. Rather we desire to offer you devotionals authored by Rev. Gerald Whetstone (Pastor Gerry), ordained Elder and teacher in the Church of the Nazarene.  It is designed to be eye pleasing and user friendly offering options to help you find what you are looking for.

Each devotional is written with the prayer that it will nourish your relationship with God; challenge your thinking in the Lord; motivate your walk in holiness; and stimulate you to a deeper, more regular study of God's Word.

Devotionals are emailed to all who would like to receive them via email once a week free of charge. New subscribers, comments, thoughts, or responses are welcome. You can do any of these by clicking below on the appropriate link. You are welcome to use the material in these devotionals for non-profit purposes without permission. You are requested to inform Pastor Gerry if you do use them. It is encouraging to see how God is using this ministry.

Enjoy and most importantly - Keep Close to Jesus!

"A New Day"

Do you find it intriguing that we refer to a day as morning to evening? Probably not, for culturally this is how a day is defined. Maybe this is why when we read the Creation Account in Genesis 1 we are caught by surprise when the account notes, it was the evening and the morning. It is even emphasized by its repetition throughout the account. Six times after each day we read, it was the evening and the morning.  The Hebrew calendar was set up this way including celebrating the Sabbath from sundown Friday to sunset Saturday.

"Get In Step"

These are desperate days. As trite as this statement is, it is important for us to be reminded of the reality that we live in evil, desperate days. One glance of the daily news brings this reality to the forefront. Wars, rumors of wars, fathers pulling guns on their seven year old son’s football coach, parents murdering children, kids killing schoolmates and teachers, public officials resigning in disgrace due to inappropriate sexual activity, company officials embezzling funds causing company’s collapse and on and on we could go. These are desperate times. How are God’s people to respond to such desperate days?

Not Fall Away on Account of Jesus - Luke 7:18-23, Hebrews 12:2

"Not Fall Away on Account of Jesus"

We don’t expect this from him. There are others that such doubt and questioning is expected, but not John the Baptist. There he sat in prison aware that his life would soon be taken from him and the question began to haunt him. “Is Jesus the Christ?” He had the awesome responsibility and privilege of paving the way for Jesus, of announcing His arrival, and introducing Him to the world as he baptized Him that special day. Now deep within the prison walls he wonders and sends word to Jesus; “are you the one or should we be expecting another?”  Jesus did not rebuke, but with understanding and compassion instructs the messengers to return to John and report to him what they had seen and heard. Jesus words and life testified to the fact that He was indeed the One and John could be confident in this. (Luke 7:18-23)

Though not expected, we are not taken back by John’s moments of doubt. Who could blame him for the questioning under such circumstances? But Jesus words following His instructions to the messengers leap out of the account grabbing our attention; “Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of me.” Wait a minute; fall away on account of Jesus? How could this be? How could someone fall away - walk away - leave the faith on account of Jesus? Doesn’t our faith find its rest in Him? What can He mean by this?
