Welcome

Every been caught by surprise? Ever been blown away by something? This is what this ministry has done to me. When God gave me the idea for A Pause to Ponder God’s Word I never dreamed that it would grow to what it is today (and it continues to grow). It began with a pastor’s desire to help his parishioners keep their focus during Passion Week, offering to send a devotional each morning of that week to those who would like to receive it. The next thing I knew I was getting email requests to receive the devotional along with requests to continue writing and sending them, in addition to requests for previously written ones. The rest, as they say, is history. I stand amazed and humbled that God would grant me the privilege of ministering to people via this medium.

This site is not designed to WOW you. Rather we desire to offer you devotionals authored by Rev. Gerald Whetstone (Pastor Gerry), ordained Elder and teacher in the Church of the Nazarene.  It is designed to be eye pleasing and user friendly offering options to help you find what you are looking for.

Each devotional is written with the prayer that it will nourish your relationship with God; challenge your thinking in the Lord; motivate your walk in holiness; and stimulate you to a deeper, more regular study of God's Word.

Devotionals are emailed to all who would like to receive them via email once a week free of charge. New subscribers, comments, thoughts, or responses are welcome. You can do any of these by clicking below on the appropriate link. You are welcome to use the material in these devotionals for non-profit purposes without permission. You are requested to inform Pastor Gerry if you do use them. It is encouraging to see how God is using this ministry.

Enjoy and most importantly - Keep Close to Jesus!

A Pause to Ponder God's Word
"Outsiders"

We live in a world of insiders and outsiders. It may not always be spoken or even clearly delineated, but one knows whether he or she is an insider or an outsider. There are those that would suggest that the church has no insiders or outsiders. I appreciate the sediment in the statement – we as people of grace should never exclude anyone, everyone should be welcome – but the fact remains, there are insiders and outsiders. There are those outside, those who have not received Christ; they have not accepted the grace offered and entered into relationship with God through Christ Jesus. There are those who are not in The Kingdom. We struggle with the terms we use to identify such people, a healthy thing, but we cannot simply ignore the Scriptural understanding and terms.

"God's Work of Art"

It hangs on the wall here in my home study. It is a 34 inch square. Over the years it has hung in my studies and when noticed by others it brings many different responses. It is a oil painting of a tractor-trailer truck driving along the rolling mountains of northern New England. My cousin, the artist who painted it and gave it to me as a gift, tells me it is a neo-orthodox impressionistic painting. Though I really don’t know what that means, the painting has special significance to me for I know the artist and he graciously gave me the painting. Though my cousin could have sold this for a great deal of money, he gave it to me and it is priceless to me.

"Careful Wise Living"

A cursory glance at any news periodical or a casual ear toward a news broadcast readily reveals that we are living in evil days. Evil abounds. Much of it has been redefined or renamed masquerading as acceptable. Nevertheless, it remains obvious, these are evil days.
