Every been caught by surprise? Ever been blown away by something? This is what this ministry has done to me. When God gave me the idea for A Pause to Ponder God’s Word I never dreamed that it would grow to what it is today (and it continues to grow). It began with a pastor’s desire to help his parishioners keep their focus during Passion Week, offering to send a devotional each morning of that week to those who would like to receive it. The next thing I knew I was getting email requests to receive the devotional along with requests to continue writing and sending them, in addition to requests for previously written ones. The rest, as they say, is history. I stand amazed and humbled that God would grant me the privilege of ministering to people via this medium.
This site is not designed to WOW you. Rather we desire to offer you devotionals authored by Rev. Gerald Whetstone (Pastor Gerry), ordained Elder and teacher in the Church of the Nazarene. It is designed to be eye pleasing and user friendly offering options to help you find what you are looking for. Each devotional is written with the prayer that it will nourish your relationship with God; challenge your thinking in the Lord; motivate your walk in holiness; and stimulate you to a deeper, more regular study of God's Word. Devotionals are emailed to all who would like to receive them via email once a week free of charge. New subscribers, comments, thoughts, or responses are welcome. You can do any of these by clicking below on the appropriate link. You are welcome to use the material in these devotionals for non-profit purposes without permission. You are requested to inform Pastor Gerry if you do use them. It is encouraging to see how God is using this ministry. Enjoy and most importantly - Keep Close to Jesus! |

A Pause to Ponder God's Word "Give To God"
There are times we probably shouldn’t laugh, but we cannot seem to help ourselves. They thought they were so smart. They had it all figured out. They finally devised a question they believed would trap Jesus. So they came to him and buttered Him up. Teacher, they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. Then they snidely popped the question: Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar? The question had hardly been asked before Jesus flipped the coin on them. Show me a coin. Whose picture is on it? It was Caesar’s of course. Jesus continued; Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. (Matthew 22:15-22) They were rendered speechless, dumbfounded and they slipped away quietly. “Gotch ya! Sizzle! Chuckle…” Jesus probably didn’t feel that way, but we do. |

A Pause to Ponder God's Word "Yielded to the Father’s Will" Jesus along with the eleven arrived at Gethsemane. Jesus, the man, was recoiling from what He was about to face. Already the sin of the world was being laid upon Him. Already the pain of becoming sin for us was weighing Him down. He quietly informed the band of men that He was “overwhelmed with sorrow, even to the point of death.” (Mark 14:34) The shadow of the cross was already looming over Him and He wasn’t sure He would be able to make it. He was troubled, distressed and the pain was already reaching the non-bearable point. Three times He prayed; “Father if there is any way let this cup pass from me.” (Mark 14:36) Where He found what He needed to handle the cross victoriously is where we find what we need in our Gethsemane times.

A Pause to Ponder God's Word "Go and Do Likewise"
There is something about the familiar. It is comfortable, even comforting. We slide into the familiar with a sense of confidence and assurance that makes us feel at ease. We have been here before. This is familiar territory. No need to pay much attention. Things are under control here.
This can happen with Scripture as well. The well known familiar portions of Scripture don’t have the punch they once had. We have heard them many times before. We slip into them as we do our well-worn clothes. We know this; relax. |
